Personally, I think that the best public speaking competition is how many new leads you can generate and convert with public speaking, and how many new clients you get, and how many new referrals you create.

I love standing ovations, but that doesn't pay the rent! Speaking doesn't have to be a for-profit activity, but it sure doesn't hurt!

Best,
David Portney

Hi Chris - good story!

I ranted about public speaking competitions a while ago, as I just can't understand the point of competing for the sake of competing. What you did however, competing for the sake of *learning* makes a lot of sense to me.

Simon

PS: my public competition speaking rant is at

Dear Chris,

your post is fantastic! Guess what? I am preparing a speech to "persuade with power" the members of our club (TM Easyclub Milan - Italy) to organize the fist TM contest! The only thing I am not sure about is one and maybe you can help me with that.
If a TM Club is not part of a district can the winner of the contest participate to other international contests? Unfortunately we still can't be part of a district because there is still only one club in Italy, but we are networking with other clubs in Switzerland and helping another Italian club to start. What do you think?

Thanx in advance! and congratulations for your brilliant blog! Vale
