Good Points. Toastmastes is great for getting new speakers over the hurdle of making lots of mistakes, but it's easy to fall into that trap of seeking to perfect style instead of refining content.

Chris - I would agree that there is a trap in expecting a speaker to follow a "system" and being more aware of the system than the message. I teach managerial communication to MBAs and start by forcing everybody to follow a fairly strict template for a 3 minute persuasive speech - and I see that I have got to the stage that I am watching for the structure more than listening to the message. Thanks for making me aware of myself ;-)

Dr. Goldsmith put out a book telling other people that What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. Thus he should be able to accept input from someone else (possibly Nick Morgan) on how he too could change in order to improve his style. So should you. Nobody is perfect, and (just like a navel) everyone has an opinion. (Withholding information is #9 on Goldsmith’s list of 20 bad habits).

Go and read Nick Morgan’s November 2008 article in the Harvard Business Review on “How to become an authentic speaker.” It’s worth about fifty of anyone’s blog posts, and might even change your life.

That is possible. I didn’t name names, because I didn't want to point fingers or scold anyone that I disagreed with.

Are you perhaps describing this critique by Nick Morgan?
